'One Team' in times of crisis – A Haiyan story, part 1
On November 8, 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, made landfall on the Philippines. This is the story of how NGA’s team in the Philippines rose to the challenge, pulling together as one team and providing relief to those who were hit hardest.
Tropical cyclone Haiyan was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing over 6,000 in the country alone. Haiyan was also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed.
The typhoon devastated the Visayas region. The storm crossed the region for almost a day, causing widespread flooding, power loss, and landslides. The Typhoon laid waste to homes while leaving around 11 million injured and homeless as it swept past the country. Truly, November was a dark month for the entire Philippine nation as they mourned the loss of their brothers and sisters.
During times like these, it is inevitable for the Filipino spirit to rise and work together as One Team, extending a helping hand for those in need. And with this value deeply ingrained at the hearts of our NGA colleagues in Manila, they all took part in their own creative way to provide assistance.
'Bayanihan' is a Filipino term that goes deeper than camaraderie, community and teamwork. It is a value that depicts a shared responsibility to help one another, especially in times of distress.
With this in mind, volunteers from NGA’s Manila HR shared service center joined together to give rise to '#tuluNGAn', a Filipino word meaning ‘help’ (tulungan), calling for contributions and volunteers. Within the first 48 hours of the tragic event unfolding, an outpouring of donations arrived at the NGA site. Hundreds of employees donated groceries, clothes, personal necessities and medicine to be sent out to the affected areas. Teams from around the world pooled resources and sent donations
The organizing team encouraged sponsors to support the event. All savings and donations were accumulated in the #tuluNGAn Fund. With all efforts combined, and with the assistance of the NGA HR Global Teams, the #tuluNGAn drive was able to raise 1.3 million Pesos.
The NGA Philippines Senior Leadership Team identified three recipients for the #tuluNGAn fund- they are Operation Giant, Global Shapers Community and Gawad Kalinga. Each institution has unique advocacies on rising livelihood, re-establishing education and rebuilding communities.
This is a testimony of how we at NGA HR express our 'One Team' value, not only during our working hours. We do it not just for our colleagues, but also for all of our 'neighbors'. Here at NGA HR, we live ’One Team’. And we share it.
Stay tuned for more updates on our #tuluNGAn story.
