NGA Research: Non-Integrated Technology Holds Back Talent Management

The survey examined how organizations were currently securing their HR data and the type of talent data points that were most valuable.

Commissioned by NorthgateArinso, the global survey queried more than 500 respondents of varying job functions from a wide variety of industries, locations and company sizes in the period in April to June 2011. Respondents were all senior HR managers or vice presidents of HR.

The survey revealed differences in how organizations viewed HR as a function of the overall business, as well as the value that could be attained through information gathered with HR processes, most importantly talent management:

• Most notably 61 percent of respondents used between two and five different tools for managing talent. This inefficiency results in increased or excessive complexity for an organization and important technology interfacing challenges.
• For the organizations with a Talent Management solution in place, two thirds of respondents did not have it integrated with their HR information system (HRIS) managing workforce administration and payroll. In fact, 70 percent of respondents believe that a unified system of record across HR, payroll and talent processes will more effectively facilitate daily work, smarter HR reporting and improve the quality of HR data.
• 82 percent of respondents believe that HR contributes to the company’s development and transformational capacity on a daily basis. 78 percent of all respondents actively align HR strategy with overall corporate strategy, but an equal percentage of respondents argue that this alignment should be improved. This illustrates an important opportunity for HR professionals to influence the broader business strategy of an organization.
• Looking forward, 90 percent of all respondents see the identification and retention of top talent to be critical for the next three years. Specifically, in terms of growth, survey respondents indicated that performance management and career and succession planning were important drivers over the next few years.
